“I had the good fortune to work with Richard during the early to mid-nineties. And below is an example of a recent magazine feature but you can see more here:
It’s Good To Talk….
…or so those BT adverts kept telling us a few years ago. But regardless of all the ‘free’ minutes we get for our land lines & mobiles, are we beginning to lose the art of talking to each other?
These days, we are inundated with emails, texts, instant messaging & messages via social networking sites, all teaching us the new, slower & less engaging art of typing - plus the occasional dose of repetitive strain injury. And we’ve had to learn the art of ‘text speak’ too so that we can send a text message even faster or cram a longer one into the 160 characters allowed.
Whilst these new forms of communication are without doubt useful, we still haven’t learnt how & when to use them. Using the written word takes skill to explain something clearly & express exactly how you meant to say it. We’ve all been misunderstood when using the spoken word which just goes to show how difficult it is to explain something in writing.
Attempting to have meetings by text or email is a definite disaster area. For example, someone sends an email to say three other people asking for an opinion on something. Everyone replies at different times & before long absolute confusion reigns. Then, before you know it, they’ve organised the meeting or conference call they should have had in the first place.
Urgent matters are not for the written word either. I once received an email asking me to phone the sender urgently. That was at around midday. I ignored it. Just after 1pm the sender phoned me to ask if I’d received the email. “Yes,” I replied. “But you didn’t phone me,” he said. “That’s right,” I responded. This somewhat pointless conversation continued for a few minutes before he suddenly got the point!
Contrary to popular belief, the population does not sit around in front of computers all day waiting for emails, social networking notifications or chat requests to arrive. And in the time it takes to type a reply, so much more could have been said on the phone. There appears to be a mistaken belief that written messages are so much faster than spoken ones.
Nothing could be further from the truth. So let’s return to more social times and, BT, please start reminding us once again that it really is good to talk.
